Oil Paints/Mediums
Paints
At Green & Stone we stock four excellent ranges of Artists' oil colour aswell as a value for money student range.
Blockx, Micheal Harding and Sennelier all offer highly pigmented finest quality paints. Each range has it's own distinctive character and colour range.
Blockx paint has a traditional buttery consistency and is ground in poppy oil, ready to use straight from the tube or with mediums. Sennelier Artist oils are slightly firmer while maintaining a distinctive creaminess, made with an archival safflower oil. Michael Harding's range of oils are denser so they can be diluted with mediums to the artists' individual requirements. | |

BLOCKX Artists Oil Colour
"This gentleman (Jaques Blockx), who has never painted, will give more to the painters of tomorrow than all of us modern painters taken together" - Salvador Dali.
Established 1865 - Blockx artists oil paints maintain their traditional formulation, made with only the finest, most select oils and pigment. Fillers, extenders & driers are never used in Blockx formulations, instead they contain one of the highest pigment concentrations of professional artists paints. They are ground slowly and carefully on traditional stone mills to prevent pigment burning and to achieve the soft buttery consistency for which Blockx is so famous.

MICHAEL HARDINGS Artists Oil Colours
"The first quality oil paint, EXCELLENT!" DAVID HOCKNEY 1998.
"These are the best oil paints in the world today" HOWARD HODGKIN 1996.
Artist's Oil Paint with the original colour intensity that artists would have experienced prior to mass production. Michael Harding paints have grown from a range of 15 colours in 1993 to a present day 64, and are now used by many leading artists. The greatest care has been taken in selecting all the ingredients to produce colours of power and intensity. All colours are ground in a grade of Refined Cold Pressed Linseed Oil chosen for its neutral acidity. There are two exceptions to this: flake white no.1 and titanium white no. 1. These are ground in Refined Poppy Oil which therefore is slower drying as driers are not included within the formulation of this range. As well as using traditional pigments this range of paints also makes use of more recent technological breakthroughs in pigment production to produce a fine range of lake colours with very high lightfastness ratings. 225ml -

SENNELIER Extra Fine Artists' Oil Paints
Established in 1887 in Paris, Sennelier has been producing high quality oil colour for generations.
Only the finest pigments are used.
They are ground very slowly with extreme care to an extra-fine consistency. Then they are combined at maximum concentration with an archival safflower oil to yield the highest possible tinting strength and a lustrous satin finish, which dries in a uniform manner over the entire range. Unlike linseed, safflower oil is non-yellowing.
Dense, yet buttery Sennelier oils are more highly pigmented and firmer than ever. The reformulated homogeneous consistency is better suited to the diversity of modern techniques. The slightly heavier body retains its unique creaminess, while offering greater versatility. Sennelier's classic palette is expanding with 50 new, original shades that encompass contemporary trends and tastes.

Retouching Varnish
| Retouching varnish is much thinner than final coat varnishes. It can be used to bring back the paint quality of dull or dry oil. It is also used as a preliminary varnish as soon as the oil paint is dry, since oil paint can continue to dry through the film. This maybe useful for initial varnishing before an exhibition. Retouching varnish can be removed with white spirit prior to final varnishing or it can be left underneath. | |
