Gum Sanderac (Gum Juniper)

Derived from: Pine resin-Alerse tree.
Used in/as: Making decorative coatings/also as medieval Artist

Gum Rosin (Colophony)

Derived from: Exudation from pine trees- residue left in stills after removal of turpentine.
Used in/as: Adhesive & binding element.
Solvent: Turpentine.

Gum Tragacanth

Derived from: Astragains-native shrub from Asia.
Used in/as: binder for pastels/chalk. Helps bind ceramic clay to glaze.
Solvent: Soak in water overnight, boil.

Mastic Resin

Derived from: Pistachia Lentis tree.
Used in/as: Popular in 18th century & 19th centuries as a painting medium, also as a picture varnish.
Solvent: turpentine-softens at low temperature.

Derived from: Tree grown on island of Luzon.
Used in/as: Used in 14th century imparting toughness & flexibility to protective coating.
Solvent: Alcohol Benzine

Damar Resin (Gum de Mar)

Derived from: Forest trees Shorea & Hopea.
Used in/as: To make picture varnish & glaze medium.
Solvent: Turpentine.
